I am writing a paper on how magic uses math to do magic tricks and card tricks.

It is however, equally or arguable more important that you learn to be comfortable performing in front of an audience since, as a performer, that is your place of work. Many magicians concentrate too much on the first skill and then find themselves unable to comfortably perform in front of an audience.

In order to learn both of these skills, you need to start with magic tricks that require no technical skill. A little more advanced than some other magic tricks, but you’ll use the skill for a lifetime. Some of them use gimmicks and gaffs and others work by themselves because of mathematics.

How To Palm Coins

Coin tricks are one of the most respected and entertaining forms of magic. So if you want to perform professional looking coin tricks it’s vital to develop the ability to palm objects.

Palming is a technique that allows you to hold or conceal an object in your hand. As the name suggests it involves hiding the object (for example, a coin) in the palm of your hand, although other versions of palming involve the use of your fingers or thumb.

When done skillfully, you should be able to palm a coin while conveying the impression that your hand is empty. Top magicians continue the illusion by maintaining unnatural hand positions with both hands so that the hand used to palm the object in question looks less noticeable.

There are three main palming techniques that can be used to conceal coins.

1) The Classic Palm: This is the most common method and involves holding a coin between the muscle at the base of the thumb and the fleshy part on the edge of the hand. The coin is kept in place using a small amount of lateral pressure. Ideally, you should use just enough pressure to keep the coin in place when your palm is facing down. Any more pressure will make your hand look unnatural and defeat the purpose of the palming technique. With practice you’ll soon know the right amount of pressure to use.

When practising this technique there’s a natural tendency to hold your thumb further away from your fingers in order to increase the amount of grip that you can apply to the hidden object. If possible, try to resist this temptation as it can give people a clue that your hand isn’t as empty as you might like them to believe.

Try practising in front of a mirror until you can use the classic palm technique to hide coins of all shapes and weights in a natrual manner.

And when you start practising, it’s a good idea to use the largest, yet lightest coin that you can find. For example, the American half dollar is a perfect size for practising and the fact that is has a strongly milled edge provides more grip. In contrast, smaller and heavier objects take more skill to palm naturally.

2) The Finger Palm: This is a slightly easier way to conceal a coin. From being displayed at the end of all five fingertips, the coin is released and slips down inside the hand to the crease in the skin where your fingers meet the palm of your hand. This allows you to hold the coin securely using a natural looking hand position. It also has the benefit that your hand can be viewed from a wide range of angles without revealing the coin.

Often magicians reinforce this technique by combining it with misdirection or picking up another object. This further reinforces the idea that their hand is empty.

3) The Back Palm: This method of palming is used to conceal a coin behind your hand, while showing your audience that the palm of your hand is empty. It’s also the technique that magicians use when they pretend to pluck a coin out of the air or from behind a person’s ear. In most cases the coin is gripped between the pinkey and the finger next to it. The other fingers and the thumb are then used to conceal the coin.

Sleight of hands – coins magic tricks

This field of coin manipulation is a vast one and a thorough knowledge of it will add much to your Magical Education. Other small objects may be handled in a manner similar to coin sleights. Consequently when you have mastered the manipulations you have proceeded a long way in your mastery of Sleight of Hand.

Nelson Downs is a King of Coins. He built a great reputation by specializing in Coin Magic, and at one time his act was imitated more than any other in the realm of Magic. Who will forget his famous Miser’s Dream in which coin after coin was plucked from the air and dropped with a jingle into a borrowed hat? I do so wish that every magician could see this expert coin manipulator at work.

Another expert in coin manipulations is Manuel, Master of the Mighty Dollar, as he styles himself. His work is a revelation in coin sleights.

This is absolutely essential as your beginning in learning coin sleights as part of your close-up magic repertoire. There are many types of hands and some methods of manipulation lend themselves better to one type than to another. Practice them all, however, and then you can discover for yourself to which methods your hands are best adapted.

The most popular coin for general use is the half dollar. Start with a coin that has a fairly good milled edge. You will find them fine for manipulation work as the edges are well milled and permit of a firm grip. I advise you to purchase about 2 dozen of these coins as you will find them invaluable in future coin tricks.

Practising magic tricks can be difficult. I hardly ever enjoy practising magic tricks, but I do practice them, because it makes be a better magician. Practising in front of the mirror will not only show you your flaws, but it will also show you how you are going to perform in front of an audience. It will also give you the confidence to face an audience. Practice is very important in order to perform magic tricks.

Thus, without practice, you simply wont get the confidence of performing it in front of the audience. Knowledge about facts about magic tricks will tell you that the magic tricks are not magic but a skill that creates an illusion among the audience. Practice your speech as well as the trick. Figure out before hand what you want to say during the show.

Practice doing your tricks along with the patter, until they’re perfect. Now you’re ready to amaze your friends! Practising magic tricks can make a show unforgotten in the audience’s eyes, and while watching the show they will believe that you truly are a master of illusion. Practice really will make perfect when it comes to magic.

Card tricks are something that should be practised until you can do them in your sleep and do them well. Nothing ruins a good trick quicker than someone with little practice who fumbles through a trick and gives the secrets away right off the bat. Card tricks are a hobby to make you happy. It is perfect if you spend a lot of time alone to concentrate on practising the trick. Card tricks are a staple part of every magician’s repertoire and these are the first tricks that aspiring magicians learn to do.

Magicians make coins appear to vanish through the use of controlled drops or throws. A skilled magician can place an object in one hand and use misdirection to convince the audience a transfer has occurred. Coin tricks are extremely portable. While you may be able to pull a quarter out of your child’s ear, can you bend it in half? Coin magic is a lot of fun to perform since coins are readily available, fit in your pocket, and can be borrowed to perform mysterious and entertaining feats of prestidigitation.

I’m often asked by both adults and kids about where they can learn more about the Art of Magic.  In this article, I’ll recommend top 10 magic books a newcomer to the Art of Magic should consider.  The good news is the majority of these books are available from Amazon or Barnes and Noble bookstores.

1.          Mark Wilson’s Complete Course in Magic by Mark Wilson

Mark Wilson’s book is the modern equivalent of a condensed version of the Tarbell Course in Magic series.  Wilson’s book introduces readers to a wide variety of magic ranging from card tricks, coin tricks, rope magic, mental magic, impromptu magic and even stage illusions!  It teaches the fundamentals of magic technique and is well illustrated.

2.          A Book of Magic for Young Magicians : The Secrets of Alkazar by Allan Zola Kronzek

This is one of the best books on handling key cards and has excellent presentations for classic magic effects.  It is written as a kids book but it has a lot of great tips and handling for common magic effects.  In one lesson Alkazar demonstrates an entertaining magic trick and a boring magic trick.  Both use the same method yet the book explains the importance of presentation.

Bill Tarr’s book provides a well illustrated introduction to sleight of hand.  If you want to learn how to make cards, coins, and silks disappear and reappear, this book provides an excellent introduction.  He also wrote a second book called The Second Now You See It, Now You Don’t.

How To Do Magic Tricks – Easy Magic Tricks For Kids

Just as much as kids love to watch magic, they love to perform it too. Now, here are some easy magic tricks for kids.

The first one is a vanishing coin trick. Ask a friend to hand you a coin, and then rub it on your left elbow. Pretend to be in pain, and drop the coin on the table. Then, pick up the coin with your right hand, and feign placing it in your left hand. Now, put your right hand (which is holding the coin) up your ear and rub your left hand on your elbow. Drop the coin carefully down the back of your shirt and display your empty hands to your friend.

The next trick is a torn and restored napkin trick. You will need two napkins, one of which is to be opened up and crumpled into a small ball. Hide this balled up napkin in your left hand using a finger palm. To do this, lightly grip the ball against your palm with your middle and ring fingers with the back of your hand facing the audience. Then, open up the second napkin and hold it out in your left hand for your audience to see.

Other easy magic tricks for kids are the spoon bend trick and the jumping paper clips trick. In the former, you grab a spoon, press down on it with your hands, and appear to bend it. Then, you lift up the spoon and show that it is unbent. In the latter, you attach a pair of paper clips to a dollar bill, pull the ends of the bill, and the paper clips link and jump from the dollar.

Indeed, kids enjoy watching magic tricks being performed to them by professional magicians. But more than that, kids love to perform these tricks and watch their friends be amazed by them.
